'Should you?' she retorted. 'Dear me! Supposing then, for instance - any unlikely thing will do for a supposition - that you and your mother were to have a serious quarrel.' ¡¡¡¡'My dear Rosa,' interposed Mrs. Steerforth, laughing good-naturedly, 'suggest some other supposition! James and I know our duty to each other better, I pray Heaven!' ¡¡¡¡'Oh!' said Miss Dartle, nodding her head thoughtfully. 'To be sure. That would prevent it? Why, of course it would. Exactly. Now,
oil paintingI am glad I have been so foolish as to put the case, for it is so very good to know that your duty to each other would prevent it! Thank you very much.' ¡¡¡¡One other little circumstance connected with Miss Dartle I must not omit; for I had reason to remember it thereafter, when all the irremediable past was rendered plain. During the whole of this day, but especially from this period of it, Steerforth exerted himself with his utmost skill, and that was with his utmost ease, to charm this singular creature into a pleasant and pleased companion. That he should succeed, was no matter of surprise to me. That she should struggle against the fascinating

I ran forward, and had the downhaul of the flying jib all in and fast as we slipped by the boat a hundred feet to leeward. The three men in it gazed at us suspiciously. They had been hogging the sea, and they knew Wolf Larsen by reputation at any rate. I noted that the hunter, a huge Scandinavian sitting in the bow, held his rifle, ready to hand, across his knees. It should have been in its proper place in the rack. When they came opposite our stern, Wolf Larsen greeted them with a wave of the hand, and cried: ¡¡¡¡'Come on aboard and have a "gam"?' ¡¡¡¡'To gam,' among the sealing-schooners, is a substitute for the verbs 'to visit,' 'to gossip.' It expresses the garrulity of the sea, and is a pleasant break in the monotony of the life. ¡¡¡¡The Ghost swung around into the wind, and I finished my work forward in time to run aft and lend a hand with the main-sheet. ¡¡¡¡'You will please stay on deck, Miss Brewster,' Wolf Larsen said, as he started forward to meet his guest. 'And you, too, Mr. Van Weyden.'

¡¡¡¡Inside this cumbrous and creaking structure, and behind this decayed conductor, the partie carrĂ©e took their seats - the bride and bridegroom and Mr and Mrs Crick. Angel would have liked one at least of his brothers to be present as groomsman, but their silence after his gentle hint to that effect by letter had signified that they did not care to come. They disapproved of the marriage, and could not be expected to countenance it. Perhaps it was as well that they could not be present. They were not worldly young fellows, but fraternizing with dairy-folk would have struck unpleasantly upon their biassed niceness, apart from their views of the match. ¡¡¡¡Upheld by the momentum of the time Tess knew nothing of this; did not see anything; did not know the road they were taking to the church. She knew that Angel was close to her; all the rest was a luminous mist. She was a sort of celestial person, who owed her being to poetry - one of those classical divinities Clare was accustomed to talk to her about when they took their walks together.

Who would have expected such a rise in the river in summertime!' said Marian, from the top of the roadside-bank on which they had climbed, and were maintaining a precarious footing in the hope of creeping along its slope till they were past the pool. ¡¡¡¡`We can't get there anyhow, without walking right through it, or else going round the Turnpike way; and that would make us so very late!' said Retty, pausing hopelessly. ¡¡¡¡`And I do colour up so hot, walking into church late, and all the people staring round,' said Marian,' that I hardly cool down again till we get into the That-it-may-please-Thees.' ¡¡¡¡While they stood clinging to the bank they heard a splashing round the bend of the road, and presently appeared Angel Clare, advancing along the lane towards them through the water. ¡¡¡¡Four hearts gave a big throb simultaneously. ¡¡¡¡His aspect was probably as un-Sabbatarian a one as a dogmatic parson's son often presented; his attire being his dairy clothes, long wading boots, a cabbage-leaf inside his hat to keep his head cool, with a thistle-spud to finish him off.

The A.C. looked at his blotting pad doodles. "What a bulldog you are, Fred," he said.
Half an hour later Chief-Inspector Davy was enteringa quiet and rather shabby office.
The large man behind the desk rose and put forward ahand.
"Chief-Inspector Davy? Do sit down, he said. Doyou care for a cigar?"
Chief-Inspector Davy shook his head.
"I must apologise," hesaid, in his deep countryman's voice, "for wasting your valuable time."
Mr. Robinson smiled. He was a fat man and very welldressed. He had a yellow face, his eyes were dark and sad looking and his mouth was largeand generous. He frequently smiled to display over-large teeth. "The better to eat you with," thoughtChief-Inspector Davy irrelevantly. His English was perfect and without accent but he wasnot an Englishman. Father wondered, as many others had wondered before him, whatnationality Mr. Robinson really was.

"The question is, Sir Ronald," said McNeill, "who we pull in and when?"
"There's a round dozenor so we could pull in," said Comstock. "The Harris lot are mixed up in it, we know that. There's a nice little pocket down Luton way. There's agarage at Epsom, there's a pub near Maidenhead, and there's a farm on the Great North Road."
"Any of them worth pulling in?"
"I don't think so.Small fry all of them. Links. Just links here and there in the chain. A spot where carsare converted, and turned over quickly; a respectable pub where messages get passed; andsecond-hand clothes shop where appearance can be altered, a theatrical costumier in theEast End, also very useful. They're paid, these people. Quitewell paid but they don't really know anything!"

the point of reentry from hyperspace. The point chosen by the Rebel command wasa small, blue planet of the Sullust system. The armada was positioned around it, now, this unblinking cerulean world. It looked like the eye of the serpent. The Millennium Falcon finished its rounds of the fleet's perimeter, checkingfinal positions, then pulled into place beneath the flagship. The time had come. Lando was at the controls of the Falcon. Beside him, his copilot, NienNunb—a jowled, mouse-eyed creature from Sullust—flipped switches, monitoredreadouts, and made final preparations for the jump to hyperspace. Lando set his comlink to war channel. Last hand of the night, his deal, a tablefull of high rollers—his favorite kind of game. With dry mouth, he made hissummary report to Ackbar of the command ship. "Admiral, we're in position. Allfighters are accounted for." Ackbar's voice crackled back over the headset. "Proceed with the countdown. All groups assume attack coordinates."

She caught her breath, leaped up out of the chair, and raced to the ship's hold. The Falcon's crew was finishing its work on the ship's power system. As theyworked, the lights flickered weakly, then came on and stayed on brightly. Hanfinished reconnecting the wires, and began setting a floor panel back in place whilethe Wookiee watched See-Threepio complete his work at the control panel. "Everything checks out here," Threepio reported. "If I might say so, I believethat should do it." Just then, the princess rushed breathlessly into the hold. "There's something out there!" Leia cried. Han looked up from his work. "Where?" "Outside," she said, "in the cave." As she spoke, they heard a sharp banging against the ship's hull. Chewbaccalooked up and let out a loud bark of concern. "Whatever it sounds like it's trying to get in," Threepio observed worriedly. The captain began to move out of the hold. "I'm going to see what it is," heannounced.
