Red Nude painting ¡¡¡¡Mrs. Steerforth was particularly happy in her son's society, and Steerforth was, on this occasion, particularly attentive and respectful to her. It was very interesting to me to see them together, not only on account of their mutual affection, but because of the strong personal resemblance between them, and the manner in which what was haughty or impetuous in him was softened by age and sex, in her, to a gracious dignity. I thought, more than once, that it was well no serious cause of division had ever come between them; or two such natures - I ought rather to express it,
oil painting two such shades of the same nature - might have been harder to reconcile than the two extremest opposites in creation. The idea did not originate in my own discernment, I am bound to confess, but in a speech of Rosa Dartle's. ¡¡¡¡She said at dinner: ¡¡¡¡'Oh, but do tell me, though, somebody, because I have been thinking about it all day, and I want to know.' ¡¡¡¡'You want to know what, Rosa?' returned Mrs. Steerforth. 'Pray, pray, Rosa, do not be mysterious.'

¡¡¡¡With a feeling of faintness she withdrew the letter. There it was - sealed up, just as it had left her hands. The mountain had not yet been removed. She could not let him read it now, the house being in full bustle of preparation; and descending to her own room she destroyed the letter there. ¡¡¡¡She was so pale when he saw her again that he felt quite anxious. The incident of the misplaced letter she had jumped at as if it prevented a confession; but she knew in her conscience that it need not; there was still time. Yet everything was in a stir; there was coming and going; all had to dress, the dairyman and Mrs Crick having been asked to accompany them as witnesses; and reflection or deliberate talk was well-nigh impossible. The only minute Tess could get to be alone with Clare was when they met upon the landing.

They are excellent dairywomen.' ¡¡¡¡`Yes: though not better than you.' ¡¡¡¡`They skim better than I.' ¡¡¡¡`Do they?' ¡¡¡¡Clare remained observing them - not without their observing him. ¡¡¡¡`She is colouring up,' continued Tess heroically. ¡¡¡¡`Who?' ¡¡¡¡`Retty Priddle.' ¡¡¡¡`Oh! Why is that?' ¡¡¡¡`Because you are looking at her.' ¡¡¡¡Self-sacrificing as her mood might be Tess could not well go further and cry, `Marry one of them, if you really do want a dairywoman and not a lady; and don't think of marrying me!' She followed Dairyman Crick, and had the mournful satisfaction of seeing that Clare remained behind. ¡¡¡¡From this day she forced herself to take pains to avoid him - never allowing herself, as formerly, to remain long in his company, even if their juxtaposition were purely accidental. She gave the other three every chance.

"You're a stubborn olddevil, Fred," he said. "Have ityour own way. Go and worry the top brains behind the international financiers of Europe."
"He'll know,"said Chief-Inspector Davy. "He'll know. And if he doesn't, he can find out bypressing one buzzer on his desk or making one telephone call."
  "I don't know that he'll be pleased."
"Probably not," saidFather, "but it won't take much ofhis time. I've got to have authority behind me, though."
"You're really seriousabout this place, Bertram's, aren'tyou? But what have you got to go on? It's well run, has a goodrespectable clientele – no trouble with the licensing laws."
"I know – I know. Nodrinks, no drugs, no gambling, no accommodation for criminals. All pure as the drivensnow. No beatniks, no thugs, no juvenile delinquents. Just sober

asubject that had grown terrifically in importance during the last two or three years. Itconcerned a branch of crime whose success had been overwhelmingly disquieting. Robbery ona big scale was increasing. Bank hold-ups, snatches of pay rolls, thefts of consignmentsof jewels sent through the mail, train robberies. Hardly a month passed but some daringand stupendous coup was attempted and brought off successfully.
Sir Ronald Graves, Assistance Commissioner ofScotland Yard was presiding at the head of the table. According to his usual custom he didmore listening than talking. No formal reports were being presented on this occasion. Allthat belonged to the ordinary routine of C.I.D. work. This was a high level consultation,a general pooling of ideas between men looking at affairs from slightly different pointsof view. Sir Ronald Graves' eyes went slowly round his littlegroup, then he nodded his head to a man at the end of the table.

hasn't driven it fully away." He molded with his voice, tried to form the potentialreality with the strength of his belief. "That's why you could not destroy me.That's why you won't take me to your Emperor now." Vader seemed almost to smile through his mask at his son's use of Jedivoice-manipulation. He looked down at the lightsaber the captain had givenhim—Luke's lightsaber. So the boy was truly a Jedi now. A man grown. He heldthe lightsaber up. "You have constructed another." "This one is mine," Luke said quietly. "I no longer use yours." Vader ignited the blade, examined its humming brilliant light, like an admiringcraftsman. "Your skills are complete. Indeed, you are as powerful as the Emperorhas foreseen." They stood there for a moment, the lightsaber between them. Sparks dove inand out of the cutting edge: photons pushed to the brink by the energy pulsingbetween these two warriors. "Come with me, Father."

What is thy bidding, my master?" Vader asked with all the solemnity of a priestattending his god. "There is a grave disturbance in the Force," the Emperor said. "I have felt it," the Dark Lord replied solemnly. The Emperor emphasized the danger as he continued. "Our situation is mostprecarious. We have a new enemy who could bring about our destruction." "Our destruction? Who?" "The son of Skywalker. You must destroy him, or he will be our undoing." Skywalker! The thought was impossible. How could the Emperor be concerned with thisinsignificant youth? "He's not a Jedi," Vader reasoned. "He's just a boy. Obi-wan could not havetaught him so much that—" the Emperor broke in. "The Force is strong in him," he insisted. "He must bedestroyed." The Dark Lord reflected for a

Whether or not Artoo did trust the human being at the X-wing's controls, he onlyvented a meek little sigh. For a moment he was completely silent, as if thinking. Then he beeped again. "Yes, Artoo?" This communication from the robot was even more carefully put forth thanbefore—one might even call the whistle-sentences tactful. It seemed Artoo had nointention of offending the human to whom he had entrusted himself. But wasn't itpossible, the robot calculated, that the human's brain was slightly malfunctioning? After all, he had lain a long time in the snowdrifts of Hoth. Or, another possibilitycomputed by Artoo, perhaps the Wampa Ice Creature had struck him more seriouslythan Too-Onebee had diagnosed?… "No," Luke answered, "no headache. I feel fine. Why?" Artoo's chirp was coyly innocent. "No dizziness, no drowsiness. Even the scars are gone." The next whistle rose questioningly in pitch.
